Often, parents are unsure as to what equipment to buy for their child when they are considering playing the electric guitar. Children can express an interest in learning, but after a very short time change their minds in favour of something else! And the guitar, amp, lead and all, sit in the corner unused.
I would recommend that anyone in this situation should initially purchase a cheap, nylon strung, acoustic guitar (as in the ad below). This minimises the risk of wasted money. It also has the advantage of being softer on the fingers and thus easier to play before your fingers get toughened up. It will undoubtedly come in useful later as well, when your accomplished, electric guitar playing child, decides that they would like to play some more mellow, acoustic guitar!
